How does the home EV charger installation process work?

Most home EV charger installations in Brisbane are straightforward and completed within 2 to 4 hours. Here’s what the process looks like:

1. First, we assess your home setup

Before anything gets installed, we check your switchboard, your available power supply, and where the charger will be mounted. This is how we make sure the installation is right for your home, not just technically compliant on paper.

2. We advise the right charger for your EV

Not all chargers suit all homes or all vehicles. We'll walk you through what's available, what suits your car, and whether your solar setup changes the equation. If you've already bought a charger, we can install that too.

3. Clean, compliant installation

We mount the charger, run the cabling neatly, connect everything to your switchboard, and test the full system before we leave. All work meets Australian Standards and Queensland electrical compliance requirements.

4. We walk you through it

Before we pack up, we make sure you know how to use your charger, set up any app controls, and get the most out of your setup.

After installation, we're available for troubleshooting and support.

How Much Does Home EV Charger Installation Cost in Brisbane?

Here’s an honest breakdown. Most homeowners in Brisbane pay somewhere between $1,100 and $2,000 all up, but a few variables affect where you land in that range.

Standard single-phase installation: $1,100 to $1,500 This covers most Brisbane homes. If your switchboard is in good shape and the charger is going in the garage or carport near your meter box, this is typically what you’re looking at.

Installation with a long cable run: $1,300 to $1,800 If your garage is at the back of the property or the charger needs to go somewhere away from the meter box, additional cabling adds to the cost.

Installation requiring a switchboard upgrade: $1,800 to $3,000+ If your switchboard is old or doesn’t have the capacity to handle the additional load, it’ll need upgrading before we install the charger. We’ll tell you upfront if this applies to your home and why, and we’ll quote it separately so you know exactly what you’re paying for.

Three-phase installation: $1,500 to $2,200 If your home has three-phase power and you want a higher-output charger (22kW), the installation cost is slightly higher but the charging speed is significantly faster.

Charger hardware: $500 to $1,500 This depends on the brand, output (7kW vs 22kW), and whether you want smart features like solar integration, app control, or scheduled charging. We can supply a charger or install one you’ve already purchased.

We give you a fixed quote before any work starts. No surprises on the day.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard to install an EV charger?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and unfortunately one that some electricians use as an upselling opportunity.

Most Brisbane homes built after the late 1990s have a modern switchboard with circuit breakers and residual current devices. In most cases, these switchboards can handle a standard 7kW EV charger without any upgrades, as long as there’s a spare circuit available.

Where an upgrade becomes genuinely necessary:

  • Your switchboard still has ceramic fuses rather than circuit breakers
  • There are no spare circuit positions available
  • The existing circuits are already running close to their capacity
  • You want a 22kW three-phase charger, which has higher power demands

When we come out to quote, we’ll check your switchboard and give you a clear answer. If it doesn’t need upgrading, we’ll tell you. We’d rather keep your job straightforward than recommend work you don’t need.

EV Charger Installation for solar households

Brisbane has some of the highest rates of rooftop solar in the country, and pairing your solar system with an EV charger is one of the smartest ways to reduce your running costs.

The wall-mounted chargers we install can be configured to work directly with your solar output using a CT clamp controller and Wi-Fi connection. Switch on Solar Mode in the app and the charger monitors your solar generation in real time, automatically starting or ramping up charging when there’s enough excess solar energy available to power it.

In practical terms, on a sunny Brisbane day with a 6.6kW solar system, you can add 30 to 50km of range to your EV using energy you’ve already generated, at no additional cost.

What you need for effective solar EV charging:

  • A solar system of at least 5kW (6.6kW or larger gives you more flexibility)
  • A compatible smart charger with CT clamp support
  • A stable Wi-Fi connection at the point of installation

We’ll assess your solar setup as part of the quote and recommend a charger that integrates with it properly. If you have a home battery as well, we can factor that into the setup too.

"They also installed my EV charger and were, as always, efficient, tidy, and incredibly friendly. What really impressed me was their honesty. I'd had two other companies try to convince me to replace my 10-year-old switchboards, claiming they were not compliant. I asked KORLEC and Xavier immediately said they were fine. That's when I knew I'd found electricians I could trust."

Why Brisbane Homeowners choose KORLEC

We’re not a national company that dispatches a subcontractor to your door. When you call KORLEC, you’re dealing directly with the people doing the work.

Not sure if your vehicle is on the list? Just call us. If it plugs in, we can install a charger for it.

Yes. In Queensland, all EV charger installations must be carried out by a licensed electrician. It’s not just a recommendation, it’s a legal requirement. KORLEC holds QLD Electrical Licence #88433.

Absolutely. Bring your own charger and we’ll install it. We’ll just confirm it’s compatible with your home’s power supply and meets Australian Standards before we start.

A 7kW (single-phase) charger adds roughly 40 to 50km of range per hour of charging, which is more than enough for most people’s daily driving. A 22kW (three-phase) charger adds around 120 to 150km per hour but requires three-phase power at your property. We’ll advise which makes sense for your situation.

It depends on your building’s electrical infrastructure and whether you have a dedicated car space. We can assess the situation and advise. Body corporate approval is often required, and we can help you understand what’s involved.

Possibly. A portable EV charger (which plugs into a standard 15A outlet) is an option that doesn’t require any fixed installation and doesn’t need landlord approval. For a permanent wall-mounted charger, you’d need written permission from your landlord. We can help you understand what to ask for and what the installation would involve so you can have that conversation confidently.

Most home EV charger installations in Brisbane are straightforward and completed within 2 to 4 hours.
